Welcome to Children’s Services in the Rainy River District!
The early years are important. A child's brain and body develop very quickly in the first years of life. The experiences children have in early childhood have a lasting effect on their health and well-being.
We are committed to providing programs and services that enhance opportunities for early childhood development and that support healthy families. We achieve this by working with community partners to invest in and promote an affordable, accessible, responsive, and high quality early years system.
The Rainy River DSSAB has responsibility for the District’s family resource, early learning, and child care system for children from birth to 12 years of age which includes the following:
EMERGENCY CHILD CARE
On April 12 the Ministry of Education announced that all Ontario schools will move to remote learning effective April 19, 2021. Child care for non-school aged children remains open during this time. However, licensed child care programs and authorized recreation programs that serve school age children are required to close effective April 19 per the Ministry of Education. To support parents of school-aged children who are required to work during the school closure, the Ministry of Education is implementing a free, targeted emergency child care (ECC) program for school-aged children of eligible parents.

New Child Care Centre opening in Emo
The Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board (RRDSSAB) is pleased to be partnering with the Rainy River District School Board to open a new child care centre in Emo known as Stepping Stones Atelier.
This will be the first-ever licensed child care centre to open in the community and it will be directly operated by the RRDSSAB. This means that the staff of the centre will be employed by the RRDSSAB and those parents and caregivers who wish to enrol their children at Stepping Stones Atelier will register directly with the RRDSSAB. The centre is scheduled to open in late summer / early fall 2021.
Co-locating child care centres with schools helps to build strong partnerships between child care programs, before-and-after school programs, and school board programs in order to support children’s learning and well-being. Though the child care centre is part of the school building the centre has its own designated, licensed space. This means that the centre has its own secure entrance, program rooms, outdoor play areas, offices, and kitchen. Children enrolled in the before-and-after school and full-day school age programs will use classrooms and other spaces within the school.
